Yup you read it right…Dildo

Driving from Robert's Arm to Saint John's Newfoundland earlier this summer, I passed by the town of Dildo. Yup you read it right: Dildo Newfoundland. This offbeat destination, with its unique name and captivating charm, was difficult to resist. I had to stop and see it for myself.

There's nothing like small-town charm to take you back in time. Strolling along the waterfront with my camera in hand, I couldn't help but be captivated by the colors that lined the waterfront.

Meet Uncle John

Not to mention the colourful characters. Like this fellow here. I spotted him from far away, an authentic Newfoundland fisherman. Proudly adorned in traditional fishing gear, smelling of salt and sea. His name is Uncle John. At least that's what everyone calls him. As I took his portrait, a driver slowed down and with his big Newfoundland accent they asked: "Oh god oh mighty, what is Uncle John up to now?" Laughed and drove away. I had to know what he was referring to.

A few years ago there was an attempt to change the town's name. However, some of the locals refused to hear of it. So John wrote a song, shot a video and uploaded it to YouTube. It went viral. His song has over 3 million views, and the town was featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

A trip to Dildo, Newfoundland may raise eyebrows with its quirky name, but it was worth the pit stop. I only wish I could have stayed longer. There's a lot to see and do in Dildo, including seeing the world's largest rubber duck. There's also the Dildo Brewing Company, and the Dildo Museum. It would have been fun to enjoy a meal in a traditional Newfoundland pub.
