Photography Retreat

We laughed, We cried, we photographed.

I did it, I hosted my first of what I hope will be many photography retreats. The retreat was hosted in May in lovely Saint Andrews by the Sea . This retreat was designed to help provide a safe and inspiring space for women to reconnect to their creative spirit, connect with each other along with connecting to what and how they see through the lens.

I was so pleased with the enthusiasm and creativity of these ladies. We enjoyed the calm atmosphere, inspiring and meaningful conversations, as well as the connections that were formed with each other.

The scenery, the activities, the attendees, and the vibe were all perfectly in sync.

All on the same Vibe

Yoga and meditation can really work wonders for the mind and body. When I meditate, I can let go of most thoughts clouding my mind, allowing clarity and inspiration to take front stage. It's the only way for me to get my monkey brain to slow down and get into the creative flow. So when I started planning this retreat I knew I had to incorporate some form of mindfulness into it.

Michelle from Chasing Zen Yoga was our yogi and designed a Yin practice to help with photography ailments. (shoulders, neck, hips) Yin Yoga is a slow and gentle yoga practice. This makes it an excellent option for people who are introduced to yoga, have limited mobility, or want a more relaxing experience.

Finding Inspiration

Finding inspiration can sometimes be challenging. Especially when you have been at your craft for a long time. I think the key to inspiration is to immerse yourself in different experiences on a regular basis. You can do this by listening to music you don't usually listen to, walking around a different part of town, or even traveling. Sometimes, inspiration strikes when you least expect it.

During our photography retreat, we visited Steven Smith, a local artist, in his studio. This is also home to Crocker Hill Store which his lovely wife Gail tends to. Walking into the space, I was immediately struck by the sheer amount of creative energy that filled Gail's store, Steven’s studio space and also spilled out into their garden.

Tools and supplies were scattered around, along with sketches, paintings, and sculptures in various stages of completion. It was truly fascinating to see firsthand the process and environment he creates. I left there feeling inspired by Steven's passion and dedication to his work. It was truly a reminder of the power of art and the importance of having a creative outlet in our lives.

Time to Play & Explore

When you're a photographer, it's easy to get caught up in technology, gear, and the comparison game but play time in photography is very important. Playing can lead to exciting breakthroughs and increased creativity, whether it's trying out a new technique, experimenting with a different lens or camera, or simply taking a day off to shoot for yourself. Some of the greatest works of art have come from artists playing and experimenting.

As part of this retreat, I had planed out some free time to play and explore but also offered a little afternoon on styling workshop.

“When I got home the first words out of my mouth were: ‘I had no idea how much I needed that. I feel lighter than I have in years’ You’ve inspired me to keep moving forward. Thank you for your leadership and encouragement.”

Indulging in our Bliss

“Driving home I was reminiscing about the retreat. As I looked up I saw a cloud in the formation of a heart. I am leaving with such gratitude and blessed to have met each and everyone of you. Sylvie you just amaze me with all you do with such precision. You are a Gem. And Michelle you have this energy that reflects the peacefulness and guidance I needed at every yoga session.”
